WORLD CUP TRAGEDY: TWO PERSONS DIED AS A RESULT OF A STAMPEDE

Disaster struck yesterday in Brazil as the World Cup entered the quarter finals stage. Two people were killed and 19 others injured after an overpass collapsed in the World Cup host city of Belo Horizonte.

Television images showed part of a passenger bus crushed under the overpass, two trucks and a vehicle were also involved.
“The overpass was in the final stages of construction and the workers were taking down the scaffolding when the accident happened,” said a fire brigade spokesman.
A total of 13 people were rescued from the bus unscathed but the woman driver was killed.
An eye witness, Renata Soares, told Brazilian TV, GloboNews, that the casualty figure may rise as more people in other cars were underneath the debris.
Authorities in the city have declared three days of mourning, while FIFA as at press time was yet to issue a statement.
Belo Horizonte Mayor, Marcio Lacerda, declared the three days of mourning after visiting the site, even as he ordered investigation into the causes of the collapse.
It would be noted that the incident occurred about three miles from the Minas Tennis Club where the British Olympic and Paralympic teams will have their training base ahead of the Rio 2016 Olympics.
