Nigeria’s Chika Amalaha, yesterday, lived up to her pre-games rating
when she lifted a total of 196kg in Snatch and Clean & Jerk in the
53kg class of the Women’s Weightlifting event to win gold as well as
set a new games record at the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Glasgow,
Scotland.
Amalaha lifted 82kg in her first attempt in the Snatch contest. She,
however, failed to lift 85kg in her second attempt, but came back gamely
in the third attempt to snatch 85kg to keep her medal hope alive.
The mother of two went ahead to lift 111kg in her third and final
attempt in Clean & Jerk after she had lifted 102kg and 107kg in the
first and second attempts respectively.
Amalaha had won gold in Malaysia championship ahead of the Glasgow Games early in the year.
The petit female weightlifter beat the stiff opposition from Papua
New Guinea and India weightlifters, who picked the silver and bronze in
the category respectively.
Nigeria got off to her medals haul on Thursday through Nkechi Okpara after she won bronze in the 48kg class.
